The penultimate outing of the season saw 13 Follies head down to the Lakeside Lodge Golf & Country Club, a peaceful countryside retreat in the heart of Cambridgeshire. Those in the know travel from Peterborough via Huntingdon and don’t spend the first hour moaning about the state of the roads around Pondersbridge.

Before he even hit his first tee shot, Alan C had found a ball at the back of the tee. Unfortunately his first tee shot went out of bounds so he was immediately back to level on balls.

Alan W has many strengths including an uncanny ability to find golf balls. On one hole alone he found maybe 10 balls, on that same hole he promptly put 3 of them straight into the lake.

Les Wells has seen most things on a golf course over a long and varied career but the Robot Lawnmower nearly took him out:

You had to be there to appreciate this – there are an estimated 25,000 black squirrels in the UK, concentrated mostly in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, and Cambridgeshire. The first wild UK sighting was recorded near Woburn in 1912 after they reportedly escaped from a private collection. We saw most of them last Friday:

The importance of reconciling scorecards between players during play cannot be over emphasized – rather than at the table in full view of everyone!

1st – Paul Flanders and Martin both scored 43 points – Paul winning on countback by 1 shot. (Martin forfeited 2nd prize in favour of his NTP prize below)

Nearest the Pin – several of us hit lovely high ‘TV’ shots towards the 144 yard green but only Martin ended up on the green. He admitted it was a duffed 7 iron that trundled all the way. As Sean Melia told me 30 years ago it’s not “how” but “how many”.

Inevitably with such high scores, Les’ handicap knife has been out and the results can be found under the ABOUT tab – Paul and Martin in particular, may wish to look away😉

Well some interesting trivia – we last played at Lakeside July 2019 – and the winner then was Steve Preston with the same points that won this time – 43 points.
Graham Tooke will rue missing this event as his 5 point lead at the top has been demolished by Paul Flanders & Martin Zebedee leapfrogging him to the top of the leaderboard. It’s all to play for at the final society fixture at Oundle Golf Club on Friday 16 October.
