Girton Golf Club – May 2026
PRESS REPORT
Our third match of the year took place at Girton G.C. near Cambridge. This is the first time our Society has played the course. The Club website states that it is one of the most welcoming and established golf clubs in Cambridgeshire, set in beautiful countryside and offering an outstanding experience for golfers of all abilities. Feedback from those who “partaked” agreed with this description adding that the presence of so many trees and tricky greens did indeed test their abilities!
The partakers totalled 10 with 8 arriving at the appointed time for coffee and a bacon roll. Colin and Roy took a scenic route to the golf club via Duxford but still managed to have their snack before play began. Both sported similar and stylish peaked hats adding to the high class image our Society aims to project.
Many of the participants did not hesitate to bring to the attention of the Reporter, incidents or questionable behaviour of their playing partners. However, the risk of a libel claim prevents publication of the detail of such matters. The incidents included a runaway trolley, and tantrums resulting in the throwing away of a golf club or using a golf club to flatten the ground when reacting to the result of their shot.

The second group to tee off was a 4 ball comprising some, if not all, those most likely to be in the running to win the Follies Trophy. Early days but the tension on the first tee was evident to the spectators.
No doubt the Leaderboard will be carefully studied by those in contention. Much could change over the next few months given the possibility of some very high scores on those courses which are arguably less demanding than those already played.
Martin celebrated his recent birthday by winning on countback from Andy both scoring an excellent 34 points. Trevor was 3rd with 33 points following a review of his scorecard. Paul and Graham both scored 32 points so no significant change in their overall position. No player managed to stake a claim for either of the two nearest the pin awards, so Les still has lots of booze in the boot of his car.
Well done Les for including Girton in our Schedule and again managing to fix a date when the weather was perfect just before a heat wave. Les hinted that it was possible we may return to Girton next year. If so, hopefully those who missed out this year will manage to play the course next year.
